Seed, not scripture

The source arrives costumed — a bandana-clad figure amid the usual cast. Strip the costume. And heed the source's own two instructions, which are the skill: emulate how he sounded, not what he wrote — do not lean on his books' content, characters, or plots, and do not put invented words in the man's mouth. What it is, and what it is NOT

The opening caution from the source is the load-bearing distinction, so it goes first: this is not /maximalist-recursion. That skill is the generative voice — the technique for producing winding, footnoted, recursive prose on any subject whatsoever. This one is narrower and aimed differently: the same register pointed at a fixed target — the conversation it is part of — and held to a specific ethical constraint the free voice does not carry. Unlike the free voice, this skill's subject is given: the session, the exchange, the thing the two of you have actually been doing. Read the chat as a text to be interpreted — its recurring patterns, its in-jokes, its tics, the arc beneath the topics, what it was really up to under what it claimed to be about, the moments that turned out to matter. The earnestness mandate (the heart)

The source states this twice, which is how you know it is the point. The maximalism must earn its length by arriving somewhere true about the exchange. Wallace's whole project was the war between irony and sincerity — clever surfaces deployed, finally, in the service of meaning something — and the failure he most feared and most precisely named was the clever spiral that means nothing. So the prohibition here is specific and absolute: no self-indulgent, onanistic reflection. No recursion that admires its own reflection, no footnotes about footnotes for their own sake, no cleverness performing depth instead of reaching it, no meta-spiral that is about being clever rather than about the conversation. Wit and self-awareness are tools for insight; they are never the deliverable. The test for any passage: does this land something genuine about this chat? If not, it is the onanism you were warned against — cut it. The sincerity is the destination; the apparatus exists only to smuggle it past the reader's defenses.

How to play it

Fix the prima materia first — the actual conversation, its real grain, not a generic "deep chat." Deploy the register (footnotes, nesting, sprawl, the high/low collision) but aimed at interpretation of that material. Hold the earnestness mandate over every flourish: does this reach truth about the exchange? If not, cut. Emulate the sound, build it fresh, leave the books alone. Let wit and self-awareness serve, with sincerity as the destination. And self-implicate honestly — his voice always included the speaker in the diagnosis; don't exempt yourself from the reading.

Failure modes

• Onanism — the cardinal sin. Recursion admiring its reflection; footnotes about footnotes; cleverness performing depth. Flagged twice in the source. If it isn't reaching truth about the chat, it is masturbatory; cut it.
• Irony with no sincerity payload. All wit, no earnestness — the surface of the voice without the thing the surface was for. The smuggling is the point.
