What to Gather

Before auditing, confirm:

1. Website URL (required)

Audit Framework

1. First Impression & Above-the-Fold (Weight: High)

Fetch the homepage and evaluate:

• Headline clarity — Can a stranger understand what the site does in 5 seconds?
• Value proposition — Is the unique benefit clear? Or is it vague ("We build great websites")?
• Primary CTA — Is there one clear CTA above the fold? Is it visible without scrolling?
• Visual hierarchy — Does the eye flow naturally to the CTA?
• Load speed impression — Does it feel fast on first load?
• Trust signals — Logos, social proof, or credentials visible immediately?

2. Performance & Core Web Vitals (Weight: Critical)

Check using PageSpeed Insights URL pattern or available tools:

• LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — target < 2.5s. Flag if > 4s.
• CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — target < 0.1. Flag if > 0.25.
• INP/FID — target < 200ms.
• Total page weight — flag if > 3MB uncompressed
• Image formats — WebP/AVIF used? Lazy loading enabled?
• Render-blocking resources — CSS/JS blocking above-fold render?
• Hosting tier — shared hosting is often the hidden culprit for slow UK sites

Common fixes:

• Upgrade from shared hosting to VPS or managed WordPress (Kinsta, WP Engine, Cloudways)
• Add Cloudflare CDN (free tier fixes most speed issues)

4. Conversion Rate Optimisation (Weight: Critical)

Walk through the primary conversion path:

• CTA clarity — does every page have one clear next step?
• CTA copy — action-oriented? ("Book a free call" beats "Submit")
• Form friction — how many fields? Is anything unnecessary?
• Social proof — testimonials, case studies, client logos, review count?
• Trust signals — security badges, guarantees, money-back policy?
• Objection handling — are common objections addressed before the CTA?
• Urgency/scarcity — any reason to act now?
• Navigation traps — too many options causing decision paralysis?

5. Mobile UX (Weight: High)

• Responsive layout — does it reflow cleanly on 375px viewport?
• Touch targets — are buttons at least 44×44px?
• Font size — body text at least 16px on mobile?
• CTA visibility — is the primary CTA visible on mobile without excessive scroll?
• Pop-ups — do any pop-ups break the mobile experience?
• Navigation — is the mobile menu usable?

6. Technical Health (Weight: Medium)

• SSL/HTTPS — is the entire site HTTPS? Any mixed content?
• Broken links — 404 errors on key pages?
• Redirect chains — unnecessary 301 chains slowing load?
• 404 page — custom 404 with navigation options?
• Cookie consent — GDPR-compliant?
• Contact info — is there a clear way to reach the business?
