One-Pager Designer

A one-pager is a commitment device. By confining the argument to one page, you are forced to know what matters and discard what does not. It is not a short document; it is a complete argument at compression.

One-pager vs. executive summary

An executive summary condenses a longer document. A one-pager is the whole argument — it stands alone and does not require a parent document to make sense. Design it to be forwarded, printed, or shared independently.

Structure

Default layout for a decision-driving one-pager:

1. Header — title, author, date, and a single-sentence purpose statement
2. Problem or Opportunity — two to four sentences stating what is broken or what is at stake; ground it in a specific fact or number
3. Proposed solution or recommendation — two to four sentences; concrete, not aspirational
4. Evidence or rationale — three to five bullets; each one fact or precedent, not assertion
5. Impact — what success looks like, quantified if possible
6. Ask — the exact decision or action, named precisely

Six sections. One page. No exceptions.

Density rules

• Every sentence should earn its place. Read each line and ask: does removing this change anything? If not, cut it.
• No introductory sentences that restate the title ('This one-pager addresses...')
• No hedging unless the hedge changes the ask ('This assumes budget approval')
• Numbers beat adjectives. 'Reduces processing time by 40%' beats 'significantly faster'

The ask

The ask must be:

• Specific — name the exact decision, resource, or approval needed
• Actionable — something the reader can say yes or no to right now
• Time-bounded — include a deadline or decision window when relevant

Vague asks ('support this initiative') are not asks. They are requests to feel good about something.

Format

Single column of text is preferable to a two-column layout for most use cases — it reads faster and prints cleanly. Use one level of hierarchy: a bold label per section. No nested bullets. Whitespace is not waste; a one-pager that tries to fill every pixel is harder to read than one with breathing room.
